ChordWood, the acoustic folk rock duo of Kim Banfield and Perry Devine, is not a new addition to the Brookings, Oregon music scene… just newly named. Together and separately Banfield and Devine have been performing locally and songwriting for a number of years. Whether “Playing for Change” with the Stagelights Band or entertaining in open mics or concerts, their musical paths have connected on many occasions. Both musicians have the common goal of writing, recording, and performing their original material as well as covers of songs written by their favorite artists including a wide range from the unknown to the iconic.
Kim Banfield began her musical career as a child singing in church and school choirs from junior high through graduation, though her musical roots extend beyond; from her grandparents, parents, and siblings. In her early twenties Kim harmonized with her brothers and sisters, played guitar and sang on the beach in impromptu jam sessions, and wrote song lyrics whenever the mood struck. Sidetracked by marriage, kids, and employment, the music took a back seat to more practical endeavors until the spring of 2004 when Banfield joined local musician Michael “Mikey” Quale and formed the duet known as Timbre. She later was a lead and backup vocalist for Here and Now, Seventh Wave, The Backstage Band, the Stagelights House Band, and for a short time added backup vocals for the local country group Sweet Town Little. Most recently, Banfield has been writing songs and striving to become “self-contained” musically, while still collaborating with other artists on various musical endeavors.
Perry Devine has been writing songs for over 40 years. His material draws on rich life experiences, which include growing up in rural eastern Canada, traveling the world while in the U.S. Navy and surviving the hi-tech rat race of Silicon Valley in California. In addition to recording and performing, his many endeavors include computer programming, web development and producing and promoting music events along the southern Oregon coast. He has a home on six acres of riverfront property in the woods of Oregon and also lives part-time in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he works as a Software Engineer. Music is his life, but software engineering is his livelyhood.
Perry’s first full-length CD entitled “Just Devine” was recorded at ASR Studios in Brookings, Oregon with the help of the members of the band Houston Jones, Including: Travis Jones, Glenn Houston, Chojo Jacques, Peter Tucker and Chris Kee. These seasoned veterans took Perry’s well-crafted songs to amazing new heights, resulting in a CD that is sure to please all fans of Americana music.
Perry has also recorded several songs with Santa Cruz area musicians Keith Greeninger, Dayan Kai, Steve Ucello and Jim Norris, which appear on his EP entitled “All Hands On Deck”. These amazing musicians bring Perry’s songs to life with a vibrant energy that is truely infectious.
Perry often attends the Americana Song Academy in Sister’s, Oregon, where he receives intensive instruction and one-on-one mentoring from some of the finest singer/songwriters in the country, including: Ruthie Foster, Darrell Scott, Keith Greeninger, Ellis Paul, Harry Manx, Willy Porter, Jonathan Byrd, Stephen Fearing, Johnsmith, Susan Werner, Joe Craven, Rosalie Sorrels, Jud Caswell, Dennis McGregor, Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen.
